Silo wagons have been a familiar sight on European railways for decades, alongside sack wagons for transporting truck trailers. Today, silo wagons operate for a wide variety of private companies and customers. In the years between 2005 and 2013, Swiss firm Josef Meyer of Rheinfelden built several units of the type Uacns 932 silo wagon. These freight wagons are mainly used in block trains. The advantage of the wagons is that they are easy to load and unload. The wagons often run directly from the producers of the goods to be transported.
The Uacns 932 differs from delivery van to delivery van in small details: for example, some variants have ladders and gangways, while others do not. The four-axle tank wagons can hold about 70,000 litres in total and have a payload of 70 tonnes. Their maximum permitted speed is 120 km/h.
