To remedy the lack of powerful shunting locomotives, the Deutsche Bundesbahnen purchased V 60 series locomotives from the mid-1950s. The difference between the class V 60
(260) and V 60.1 (261) is the higher friction load of the BR 261. These machines, which could be found on almost all German shunting yards, reached a maximum speed of 30 km/h in shunting gear and 60 km/h in mainline gear.
On 1 October 1987, the designation of the series was changed to 360 or 361 and the machines were downgraded to small locomotives. This meant they could also be driven by small locomotive drivers instead of the better-paid drivers. The locomotives with radio remote control and automatic shunting couplers from 1988 onwards became BR 364 or 365.
