The lack of power of the diesel-powered VT 11.5 (BR 601) led to the conversion of four power cars to gas turbine propulsion in 1971, with the most striking feature now being the large air intakes in front of the driver's cab, which supplied air to the turbine.
Breakdowns made the operation of these trains increasingly unprofitable, which is why the multiple units operating under the designation BR 602 were taken out of service again by the DB in 1978 and 1979. Only railcar 602 003 has been preserved for museum purposes;
today it is in the DB Museum in Nuremberg.
